Academic Facilities and Learning Supports
Library
The University and Faculty Libraries, including the Departmental Reading Corner at D14.101, are home to reference books, course books, textbooks on language teaching theories and methodology, linguistics and literature, and multimedia (CDs, DVDs, and e-books), that are available to students and academic staff of the English Department. For the enrichment and fulfillment of the (co)curricular needs of the Department, the libraries’ collection also includes international and national journals and periodicals, popular references, and other popular science materials. The University Library provides various primary references such as Undergraduate Theses, Master’s Theses, Doctoral Dissertations, textbooks, e-books, international and national journals, periodicals, and secondary references (scientific and recreational). These national and international journals are accessible through LAN or Wi-Fi (accessible at http://lib.um.ac.id/) and under an integrated online library service of SIPADU (Sistem Pelayanan Perpustakaan Terpadu).
Laboratories
Language laboratory. For teaching and learning activities, the Department has access to one language laboratory under the management of the Faculty of Letters. Located in D15.104, this laboratory is equipped with facilities such as computers with headsets, LCD projectors, TV monitors, etc. Generally, students will go to the language laboratory during listening classes. However, not all listening classes are held in the language laboratory, as some academic staff may have them in the GKB A19 or A20 with LCD projectors and speakers.
Microteaching Laboratory. This unit functions to develop pedagogical competences, particularly, the teaching competence. More specifically, this microteaching laboratory is for students to conduct peer-teaching activities before they have the internship program at school. The room is equipped with multimedia facilities such as computers, TV monitor, and DVD players, as well as CCTV to record the teaching-learning activities so as to enable the users to access and re-access the data at any time as the need arises.
Drama Laboratory. The unit where ‘drama’ classes are held is at D14.202. The students use this 259-square-meter room to conduct a grand performance as parts of the class projects. Outdoor stages are also available at the C9 Building and Outdoor Learning Space at the A19-A20 building complex. The performance can also be open to the public, in which academic staff and other fellow students may come and show their appreciation.
All laboratories and rooms are generally accessible to all departments at FS. The facilities provided are to encourage independent and collaborative learning between students within the underlying spirit of MBKM (Independent Learning Independent Campus program), with students gaining a richer learning experience through different and flexible learning activities outside the study programs. The faculty rooms or laboratory booking is carried out by checking the availability of the room through FS’s integrated system. If the room is available, the borrower clicks on the “PINJAM RUANG” feature on the website to register. A tutorial on using a room booking application is also made available here.
English Self Access Center (ESAC)
The former ESAC and its facilities were developed under the PHK-I grant (2008-2009) before it undergoes renewal and renovation under the IsDB (Islamic Development Bank) grant 2018-2019. The facilities for ESAC were developed for the purpose of instilling reflective independent learning habits in students without being dependent on the presence of course facilitators and classroom routine activities. ESAC is located on the 8th floor of the A20 Building (A20.804), equipped with an audio-computer room, a mini library, a reading room, and a speaking room. To maximize learning, ESAC is easily accessible to all students, providing comfort with air-conditioned rooms, new facilities, and sitting spaces on the building’s mezzanine.
All the students have been introduced to this big complete area, as in their first semester there is a session called the Independent Study, when the students can stay in the area and explore the materials provided in the reading room or find materials for practicing their speaking in the speaking room or find materials to listen to through the computers in the audio-computer room. The academic staff think that the ESAC is the resource center where they can find materials to support their teaching, their research, as well as their projects. Most of them may make use of these computers to select, produce, and/or edit recorded audio and/or audio-visual materials used as creative and innovative teaching materials, specific test materials, or research project stuff.
ESAC provides learning resources and facilities, both electronic and non-electronic, such as textbooks, modules on language skills training, literary works of various genres, learning CDs/VCDs/DVDs, e-books, foreign movies of various genres, internet, computers, photocopy machines, and printing services. These resources and facilities are aimed at providing various, continuous, and appropriate learning exposure to cater to the student’s individual needs.
ESAC has also started to provide programs on increased quality services for independent learning for students at the University. Among the services are (1) the development of electronic and non-electronic learning materials for Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, tests, Grammar, Vocabulary, and EAP (English for Academic Purposes) for students of the Department of English and other departments, and (2) competitions for English competences such as debating, news reporting, speech, script writing, creative writing, film studies, and subtitling for students.
Teacher Resources Unit (TRU)
The TRU, at the Departmental Reading Corner, is designed as an independent learning venue for the Department’s teaching staff and is equipped with textbooks and reference works. This facility is designed as a support facility for the teaching-learning and research activities in the Department, with the primary function being to quench English teachers’ thirst for knowledge. To ensure its accessibility, the TRU is embedded within the lecturers’ working space at D14.101.
Center for Language and Culture (CLC)
The CLC is established by FS as a home for a wide variety of services available for students and public, such as 1) language courses (e.g., General English, English for Specific Purposes, TOEFL Preparation, Arabic Course, Arabic for Survival Course, Deutsch), 2) testing center (e.g., ITP TOEFL, English Proficiency Test (EPT), IELTS, Ikhtibaratul Lughah Al’Arabiyah), 3) text proofreading, 4) translation services (English, Arabic, and German), and 5) other programs within the scope of language and culture.
Academic Writing Center (AWC)
Established in 2021 with the support of RELO, the AWC is practically under CLC management. The center is a resource for UM faculty members, staff, students, and community members. They can get support with writing research articles by accessing a number of writing resource databases, attending the AWC writing events and workshops, and scheduling one-on-one sessions with writing tutors. Further details are available here.
Scholarships
A number of scholarships are offered by the Indonesian government, such as Beasiswa Bidikmisi and Kartu Indonesia Pintar with the quota and selection procedures for these scholarships being all determined by the Ministry of Education and Culture. In addition to this state-governed scholarship, UM also administers various scholarship schemes using funding from internal sources as well as private sectors. For the internal source, students are offered PPA (Peningkatan Prestasi Akademik) or Academic Improvement Scholarship for students whose academic performance shows a continuous and consistent improvement. Scholarship funding from the private sectors at UM comes from Bank Indonesia, Djarum, Yayasan Toyota Astra, Bank Rakyat Indonesia, PT Gudang Garam, PT Adaro Indonesia, etc. The detailed information on selection process as well as requirements is available at http://kemahasiswaan.um.ac.id/category/beasiswa/.
Health and Wellbeing Facilities and Supports
Sport Facilities
To improve and maintain students’ health, UM provides various sports and gym facilities, both outdoors and indoors. While the facilities are maintained and managed by FIK or the Faculty of Sport Sciences, they are not exclusive to the students of this faculty. Instead, everyone, including students, academic and UM support staff, is eligible to use the facilities, with FIK establishing a clear procedure for facility usage. For example, to use outdoor facilities, such as a football stadium, tennis court, or swimming pool, a person or a group of persons must write an application letter proposed to the Vice-Dean II of the Faculty. Yet, as long as they are not scheduled, the facilities are open. Unlike outdoor sports facilities, to use indoor facilities, particularly those that belong to the Fitness & Aerobic lab facilities, a simple procedure is applied. One must register to be a member before using the available facilities or joining the aerobic exercises as scheduled.
Healthcare Center
The students, as well as the staff, have access to the Healthcare Center, consisting of the General and the Dental unit. They open daily, Monday to Thursday, from 08.00 – 14.00, with the Friday schedule tending to be shorter (08-00 to 10.00). When the patients need further treatment, they will be sent to one of the hospitals not far from the campus, such as the Syaiful Anwar hospital (about 3 km), with the ambulance being readily available around the Center. Furthermore, the Healthcare Center also intends to carry out programs to monitor the general health of all UM students. Currently, the Director plans to talk about relevant topics such as ‘the danger of the drugs’ and ‘Juvenile Delinquency’ in the students’ seminars held by the University.
Facilities for Religious Activities
The facilities for all of the academic staff, students, and support staff to conduct religious practices are also available. For Muslims, for example, the Al-Hikmah mosque is available for praying, reciting Al-Qur’an, sharing information, and seminars. There are also places for other creeds. Christians, Catholics, Buddhists, Hindus, and other religions and beliefs are provided with designated places around the campus to hold similar activities such as seminars and celebrating religious events such as Easter and Christmas. Students’ organizations focusing on religions are available to organize various religious activities under the supervision of the University. In other words, the University has provided facilities for the academic staff, students, and supporting staffs for the betterment of their varied spiritual lives.
Food Centers and Stores
Food centers around the campus provide different menus so that the academic staff, the students, and the support staff may have sufficient alternatives for their breakfast and/or lunch. The centers also provide different atmospheres, one with a clean and neat arrangement of the tables and chairs, while the others with casual style. The basic idea is that the food and drinks are hygienic, tasteful, and affordable. It can be said that the availability of food centers can support any academic and non-academic activities done during the weekdays. Small stores are available throughout campus that sell stationeries, the KPRI UM (Koperasi Pegawai Republik Indonesia) store can provide items for the daily needs of the students and staff, while UM Mart provides official merchandise of The State University of Malang.
Dormitories
The university also provides dormitories for students coming from different cities. The availability of the dorms is of great help to minimize their anxiety in finding a place to stay in, especially at the beginning of their stay in Malang. The city is already full of students from different parts of the country, so finding a proper place to stay is a great challenge.
Student Counselling Services
Student support at the university level mainly covers counseling services organized by P2BK3A UM (see http://lp3.um.ac.id/index.php/p2bk3a/). There are at least three counseling services available, such as 1) peer counselor training, 2) assertive communication training, and 3) anxiety-reducing training. Other than counseling services, P2BK3A also provides non-counseling ones such as 1) Ontime Graduation training, 2) Career Day, 3) creative and critical thinking training, 4) thesis writing training, and 5) preparatory training for professional employment.
Sexual Violence Prevention and Handling Corner
The Sexual Violence Prevention and Handling Task Force has been established to eradicate sexual violence within higher education institutions, specifically offering support to both victims and witnesses of sexual violence at the State University of Malang. This support encompasses psychological counseling, physical health services, legal support, advocacy, and spiritual-social assistance. These services are also extended to victims with disabilities. Complaints can be filed by completing a complaint form here or through WhatsApp at +62-823-3282-1023.
Inclusive Students Services
University support for students with disabilities encompasses a range of services and accommodations designed to ensure equitable access to education (see https://lp3.um.ac.id/index.php/plpbk/). This support includes 1) Physical Accessibility: Educational institutions strive to provide barrier-free environments through ramps, elevators, and accessible restrooms to accommodate students with mobility issues, 2) Special Education Programs: Tailored educational programs are available to meet the specific learning needs of students with disabilities, 3) Inclusive Policies: the university has implemented policies and regulations aimed at promoting inclusivity and preventing discrimination in educational settings, ensuring that students with disabilities have equal opportunities to succeed, 4) Support Services: Counseling, career guidance, and other support services are available to address the emotional, social, and career development needs of students with disabilities, and 5)Training for Educators: Teachers and educational staff receive training on inclusive education practices and how to effectively support students with diverse learning needs. PLPBK also develops a system for identifying and assessing learning needs and services for students with special needs through this link.
Other facilities supporting campus life are banks, post office, and photocopy centers. These facilities are available within easy reach, so the people on the campus can focus on practical and efficient learning and research performances.
All of the educational facilities in the Department are centered around one point of development: building the synergy of all units as a holistic ICT-based service to improve the quality, competitiveness, and relevance of the Department at the national and international markets. The synergy is worked about through the integration of services into the curriculum and teaching-learning activities at the Department, as well as through added varieties and improved quality of public access, which is based on the development of income-generating units to ascertain the sustainability of the Department as an excellent educational unit.
