Code of Student Conduct
The Department of English is dedicated to cultivating academic and personal excellence in a way that is inclusive and supportive, where communal values as well as the dignity and rights of each person are respected. It aims to provide a safe and conducive environment where all students can study free from bullying, harassment, discrimination, and violence.
The Department of English adheres to the university’s Code of Student Conduct, which guides students’ conduct in both the academic and non-academic aspects of their university life. The code of conduct, also known as student code of ethics, provides an overview of the behaviors generally expected of students as members of the university community. It aims to:
- provide a guide for all UM students to interact and behave within the campus or among the general public;
- support the Vision, Missions, and Objectives of UM;
- shape students into individuals who are pious, of noble characters, virtuous, and disciplined;
- produce students with professionalism and excellence;
- create an academic climate conducive for student learning and self-development activities;
- build and develop an image of students who uphold ethical values at all times;
- maintain order and harmony within the UM campus environment; and
- build and develop mutual support and appreciation between members of UM society.
The Code of Student Conduct covers a list of students’ rights and obligations, ethical codes, sanctions, and enforcements. For further information, please refer to the university’s website (or click here for the Indonesian version). The University expects students to uphold all the stipulations of this Code of Student Conduct at all times.
Academic Integrity
1. Avoidance of Plagiarism
The Department of English strictly prohibits plagiarism, which is defined as the use of someone else’s words, ideas, or work without proper acknowledgment or citation. This includes, but is not limited to, copying and pasting text from sources without proper citation, paraphrasing another person’s ideas without attribution, and submitting work that has been previously submitted for academic credit without permission.
To avoid plagiarism in their academic work, students are expected to:
- submit works of their own for every assignment;
- acknowledge the contributions of others to their work (e.g., cited sources, collaborators, etc.);
- properly cite all sources used in their work, including quotations, paraphrases, and ideas.
- use quotation marks or block quotes for direct quotations.
- provide accurate and complete citations according to the appropriate citation style guidelines (e.g., APA, MLA, etc.).
- ensure ethical and responsible use of AI technologies when the technologies are incorporated into their work (see also no. 3)
2. Avoidance of Redundant or Duplicate Work (Paper/Assignment)
Redundant or duplicate work is work which overlaps substantially with one being or already submitted for other course(s). If redundant or duplicate work is attempted or occurs without notification to the course facilitator, students should expect action to be taken.
When submitting a work, the author(s)/student(s) should always make a full statement to the course facilitator about all submissions and previous papers that might be regarded as redundant or duplicate of the same or very similar works. The author(s)/student(s) should alert the course facilitator if the work includes subjects about which a previous paper is being/has been submitted to (an)other course(s). Copies of such material, including papers in press, should be included with the submitted paper to assist the course facilitator in determining how to handle the matter.
3. Ethical and Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The Department of English recognizes the potential benefits and challenges of utilizing AI tools in academic work. While AI can enhance research and learning experiences, it is crucial to maintain ethical standards and academic integrity when employing such tools. Students are supposed to critically evaluate any content generated by AI. Unethical uses or misuses of AI technologies, including plagiarism and deceptive practices, are strongly prohibited. For example, students should not use AI to automatically generate essays or other written assignments and then submit them for academic assessment. This practice diminishes the students’ own effort and originality, as the work is not produced by the students but by the AI technology. Another example of deceptive practices that students should not do is using AI to fabricate or manipulate data or results in order to support a hypothesis or claim in academic research. This practice is unethical as it misrepresents the findings of research and undermines the integrity of academic work. Overall, while AI technologies can be valuable learning support, they should not be used in a way that replaces or diminishes the need for active engagement and effort in the learning process.
4. Declaration of Originality
To ensure that students comply with the abovementioned regulation, they will need to attach the following declaration of originality with every submitted paper.
DECLARATION OF ORIGINALITY
I certify that this assignment/report is my own work, based on my personal study and/or research and that I have acknowledged all materials and sources used in its preparation, whether they be books, articles, reports, lecture notes, and any other kinds of document, electronic or personal communication. I also certify that this assignment/report has not previously been submitted for assessment in any other course, except where specific permission has been granted from all course facilitator(s) involved, or at any other time in this course, and that I have not copied in part or whole or otherwise plagiarized the work of other students and/or persons.
Should later it be revealed that this work contains plagiarized part(s) of others’ and/or self intellectual works of any kind, I would readily accept the sanction taken by the University on this matter.
